The movie Kerala Story has already created a lot of political and social buzz in India and Indian community around the world. The obsession around this movie can be well understood when prime minister used the title in his election speech. The politics of vote bank hit hard and the timing of release of this movie is absolutely 'co-incidental' with election campaign ongoing in Karnataka. The news, reviews, critics, praises and other social media hulla-gulla around this movie is so hard hitting that it is now not just an another cinematic experience. There are political ideologies which are banning this movie in their respective states as Mamta Banarji has banned it in Bangal while a few other states are seeking a tax-free status for this movie. These are the times when even cinema is not a thing to entertain or aware only but to fight elections also. The BJP used the movie's narrative to establish itself as the Hindu saviors while the opposition parties are pleasing Muslim voters by defaming the movie and it's narrative. A fraction in the society is taking it as mandatory to watch the movie and forcing others to go to theatres while other fraction is finding new ways to block it's screening. Well, the worst part is that both these fractions live in the very same societies and are neighbours in many places. The impact of this movie might be anything to anyone depending on what a person is extracting out of the story.
It must always be a personal choice for anyone to watch a movie or not to watch it. The involvement of states and political influencers have totally ruined the basic idea of cinema. One political outfit may or may not agree with an ideology but it should never try to force their opinion on any social fraction. Why it is becoming hard day by day to understand and respect the personal opinion of an individual. There might be many people who are willing to watch this movie in theatres in the state where it is banned while there might be many who are finding it distasteful where the screenings are too much. Isn't it good to respect the basic idea of Democracy and let an individual decides his fondness. If the sensor board is allowing the movie to release then one must respect the system if it is unbiased. It is rather immature to think that a cinematic narrative can be thoroughly true or thoroughly false. Young people need to think hard and believe in the idea of freedom and must also respect the fact that freedom can never be absolute. Since neighbours are to live, face, greet and survive with each other then it is necessary not to disrupt the social harmony for cheap political gains by both ideological wings. The ultimate sufferers would be civil society and the ultimate gainers would be political goons apart from producers of the movie.
