The Rain Fell Softly: A Poem of Unspoken Love and Lingering Longing by Naveen Kumar Jannat

The Rain Fell Softly

— by Naveen Kumar Jannat

The rain fell softly and slowly,
Each drop a whisper no one could know
Flowers bloomed with shyness,
As if the earth blushed in embarrassment

She stood under a jasmine tree,
Eyes locked with his, but never free
A throng stood between them like iron bars,
With laughter as light as falling stars

They breathed the same damp, scented air,
Yet fate kept them unaware
In spaces that felt close, but were far apart,
With surging tides inside their hearts

His shirt clung to his warm skin,
And hers, like silk, hugged her close
Each glance felt like a touch they couldn’t take,
Each smile was a tremble they had to fake

Peers walked by with teasing eyes,
With grins, jokes, and casual lies
The world around them could never guess
The storm beneath their calm surface

For every joke, there was a hand she hid,
For every nod, a sigh he let out
Their bodies burned with silent pleas,
Like roots entwined beneath a tree

Her fingers longed to find his face,
To trace his jaw with gentle grace
His arms ached to pull her close,
To wipe away the drops and taste her tears

But duty called, and rules stood firm,
And eyes became walls within the hall
So all they did was share a look—
Two pages read but not taken

The rain kept falling, sweet and slow,
And blossoms bloomed with a silver glow
Their hearts echoed in secret moans,
In empty rooms and silent phones

When night arrived, the longing stayed,
No kisses shared, no skin exposed
Just memories of a near embrace,
And dreams of touch that stayed out of reach

They parted ways with heavy eyes,
Each step a prayer to fate's disguise
And in the dark, alone in bed,
Each whispered word the other said

"If dawn allows, if fate is kind,
If time and space could be rewound—
Let flowers bloom, and rain keep falling,
But let no crowd stand like a wall"

So with the night, their hunger remained,
Two souls in love, untouched, unchanged
They dreamed not of lust, but of gentle grace—
To hold, to breathe, to touch a face
